Honestly I wasn’t immediately on board with a Barbie movie. I didn’t understand how it could work, and it seemed like it would either be a blatant money grab OR insulting and demeaning drivel. Once Greta Gerwig was on board, though, and with Margot Robbie in the titular role, I became cautiously optimistic. What they delivered was so much better than I could have hoped. The music choices, the casting, the story, the sly winks to anyone who had ever tried to maneuver a Barbie into normal lifelike positions- It was all brilliant. To take something so familiar and then build a world around it that we literally could never conceive ourselves, but that we immediately understood and loved whole-heartedly, must be one of the highest achievements of a creator. Watching the Behind the Scenes interviews and footage made me even happier, because it sounded like an incredibly fun and supportive workplace. And when the first sugary Peeps appeared on store shelves, I waved and said, “Hi Barbie!”
